Demon Dogs[1], or Demon Hounds[2], are beast-like, lower-level demonic canines that are employed by other demons (typically possessed mortals). There are more than a thousand types of demon dogs that exist, most of them are written in the Book of Shadows.

Overview[]

Black-eyed Demon Dogs[]

At least one type of this dog can change its form, so that its eyes widen and its teeth become sharper. Their DNA differs from their non-supernatural counterparts and is made up of some sort of hydrochloric acid compound that they drool over when they transform into their demon form. They can be easily destroyed using sodium bicarbonate. Low-level Possessor Demons can also be vanquished with the same substance, indicating that their chemical composition is the same or similar. It is possible that demon dogs seek out owners who are genetically similar to them.

Tracking Demon Dog[]

This kind of demon dog can be only summoned through Absum Veri Spell and its purpose is to find the lost person. If caster knows what lost person dreads, something they deny themselves and something they desire, dog will show them coordinates. When one of these three things is not right, this creature will grow bigger and bigger and it will try to kill the caster.

History[]

In "Pilot", Maggie Vera faced one of these creatures just after she discovered that she was a witch. The demon hunted her down and harmed her, but she was able to escape due to a group of drunk men arriving on the scene. This dog came along with his demonic master who was at the time possesing Brian.

In "The Truth about Kat and Dogs", Maggie and Mel Vera attempted to use a powerful, yet dangerous spell to find their missing sister, Macy Vaughn. The spell required the two to say the incantation over three items that belonged to Macy. However, the spell went wrong during their first two attempts to cast it, summoning a demonic hound that tried to attack them. The sisters were eventually able to figure out the spell, and this time the hound was reduced to a docile dog.

In "Past is Present" and "The Rules of Engagement", many such dogs are shown at the disposal of the demons guards which defend the territory of the Demon Overlord's manor in Switzerland.

Physical Appearance[]

Demon dogs appear as ordinary dogs in order to attract potential victims, only revealing their true nature when the prey gets close enough. In their demonic form, their eyes seem to become black and release some sort of black substance as well and the teeth in their mouths sharpen extensively, providing a green ooze-like substance.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Limited Shapeshifting: Demon dogs use this power to shift between the form of an ordinary dog and their true demonic form.
  • Sensing: Demon dogs are able to track their target.

Weaknesses[]

  • Sodium bicarbonate: This substance is able to neutralize and eventually kills them because their cells are made of some sort of hydrochloric acid compound.

Trivia[]

  • The owner of the dog in "Pilot" had black veins in its eyes, indicating that it had possessed someone's body. Its dog had the same veins. Presumably, this dog was also a Possessor Demon and possessed an ordinary white labrador to attack Maggie. This can also be further confirmed by Macy using the dog's DNA to figure out the Possessor Demon's weakness.
  • Despite their demonic origins, it seems that these dogs are capable of being neutral or even good, such as the one that helped the sisters find Macy in "The Truth about Kat and Dogs".
  • Demon dogs are most likely inspired by hellhounds, mythological dogs that guard the entrances of the afterlife and hunt lost souls.
  • In the original, the skeletons of two hellhounds were found when the demon Jinny found the location of an ancient city. It is not known why these demon dogs were not vanquished and after them there were bones at all.
